What are fungal skin infections and athlete's foot?
Fungal skin infections are very common infectious diseases caused by microscopic fungi that live on the dead tissue of the hair, toenails and outer layers of skin etc. The most common type is the athlete's foot (tinea pedis), followed by tinea manuum (skin infections of the hands), Pityriasis versicolor, Tinea Corporis etc.
If you or any family members suffer from any types of skin infections, symptoms can last for months. Sufferers should seek appropriate treatments immediately for an earlier cure to reduce the chance of spreading to other family members.

They are caused by the same pathogenic fungal infections where the fungi infect the nails and/or the outer layers of skin. If you suffer from both conditions, you should seek medical advice for treatment.

Not all the cases of itchy skin are caused by fungal skin infections. Some common skin diseases such as eczema, contact dermatitis may also cause itchy skin, if in doubt, should seek medical advice for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

The fungi will attack the skin which is warm and moist, may give rise to typical red rings with a clear central area, namely ringworm, or it may cause athlete's foot and caused redness, itchiness, scaling and blisters between the toes.

Because it is contagious, it may worsen and spread to other parts of the body including the nails which will develop onychomycosis. If the infected area is injured, it may cause other complications such as bacterial infection. If the hair follicle is damaged, it may also cause hair loss.

There are oral and topical anti-fungal medications for the treatment of fungal skin infections. They can be used depends on the severity of the diseases and the conditions of the patients. Some medication may cause unwanted side effects, therefore it is important that patients should follow medical advices when using these drugs.
